Custom staircase with glass work by Diane at Mesolini Glass Studio on Bainbridge Island. I was contacted by Arlo, the artist originally building it—he’d been diagnosed with brain cancer and wanted me to finish what he’d started. What I got was a set of concrete treads, no glass, no railing, and a whole book of pencil drawings. His vision was clear. We built the railings from his drawings, Max Strom handled most of the welding, and Diane created the beautiful melted glass panels. She wasn’t comfortable installing them on the uneven concrete treads, so I took on cutting, grinding, and epoxying each panel to fit, then ran LED lighting on a light sensor so at night the treads shine down through all that gorgeous glass. Unfortunately, Arlo passed away before he could see it finished—but his vision’s all there. Photos by Diane Mesolini.
